Assistant or Associate Professor ‘Interventions Centre for Urban Mental Health’

We are looking for a faculty member who will develop a dynamic and collaborative research interdisciplinaryprogram that will focus on interventions and policy making regarding prevention and treatment of mental health problems and mental health conditions. More specifically, you will develop a research line on the innovation and evaluation of interventions to prevent and target common mental health conditions (such as depressive disorder).These interventions target several levels, i.e. on the individual level (e.g. with the use of technical devices), on community level (e.g. policies promoting social cohesion), and/or societal level (for instance policies on social determinants such as income distribution) in urban areas. These interventions will be derived from our developed framework of the Centre for Urban Mental Health using a complex systems approach as backbone (see https://www.centreforurbanmentalhealth.com/about/position-paper) and feed into an overall Urban Mental Health model. This research line will be embedded within the Amsterdam UMC (Prof. C. Bockting, Department of Psychiatry and Prof. K. Stronks, Department of Public and Occupational Health) and Centre for Urban Mental Health of the University of Amsterdam.

You will establish and maintain a vigorous program of independent, externally funded research and contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching programs and/or clinical work at the Department of Psychiatry.

The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) research (including acquisition of grants and supervision of PhD students), b) clinical work (not required, but possible), c) teaching/scholarly activities

The Assistant/Associate Professor is also expected to contribute to the management and performance of theCentre for Urban Mental Health through participation at relevant meetings and taking on selected responsibilities relevant to the role, and to be responsible for the leadership of research project(s) and delivery on project objectives, maintain an up-to-date understanding of scientific developments within the appropriate fields, and ensure a high level of scientific standard is maintained on all intervention research within the Centre .
This Assistant/Associate Professorship is pending favourable assessment of deliverables mentioned in a tenure track (it is a permanent tenure track position).

PhD Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

The PhD student with a physics background will process and analyze biological and clinical HIPEC data (provided by another PhD student with a background in biology) in sophisticated mathematical models developed in an earlier project capable of integrating data on flow, temperature, chemotherapy concentration, temperature dependence of the effect of chemotherapy, temperature dependence of the penetration of chemotherapy into tissue for the different sequential low/high dose, low/high temperature 90 minute "step-up" heating protocols of mitomycin-C and platinum-based HIPEC applied in the different tumor models and in human clinical treatments.

Work will involve development, adaptation and application of advanced computer models simulating various aspects of the HIPEC procedure, which is novel in the field.

PhD student Hematology

As a PhD student your main tasks will be:

  • to use induce pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and employ gene-editing methodologies to generate knock-out (Cas9) or overexpressing (dCas9VPR) lines;
  • to perform functional and transciptional characterization on these lines
  • to perform focussed and full genome CRISPR-activation screens using iPSC-derived reporter lines;
  • generate and characterize CAR T cells that target the myeloma BM microenvironment;
  • to collaborate with technicians and supervise students
  • to present the study and results at national and international scientific meetings
  • to write scientific papers

Postdoc in vivo/molecular biology

You will work on the mechanisms that underly effective anti-cancer kinase inhibitors and delineate them by performing drug screens aimed at individual targets followed by in vivo validation of the results. PD/PK and blood brain barrier studies of existing and de novo generated drugs will be performed in collaboration with two companies. In parallel, you will work on reporter systems for real time assessment therapy resistance. For this you will develop CRISPR/Cas9 mediated knock-in fluorescent reporters that allows to visualize multiple cellular states, before and after combination therapies are applied.

PhD student Transcytosis in Barrier Endothelium

In the present project, you will investigate the proteins involved in transcytosis in more detail, using specific pathway inhibitors, mass spectrometry and other molecular techniques. To more specifically track the endocytosis and exocytosis of tracers, you will use confocal imaging and total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy in real-time in living cells. Barrier integrity will be monitored with a CellZscope system.
