As Mate 2 TUG, during your watch, you are responsible for watch keeping and navigation activities in according with the Mate / Captains’s bridge orders, the International Regulations and good seamanship practices. You determine the position of the vessel at regular intervals, monitor weather forecasts as well as navigational warnings to take timely, adequate actions when needed. Furthermore you will execute assigned activities such as watch rounds, maintenance of deck and safety equipment, correct sea charts and check functioning of instruments. You cooperate in incident investigations and record these in the vessel’s logbook.

Graduation Thesis - Simulating a cranedriver “agent” with Artificial Intelligence

The Engineering department at HMC is responsible for the engineering of all our projects, from the installation or removal of fixed and floating platforms through to the installation of subsea pipelines and infrastructures. The department brings together people from a wide variety of technical and engineering disciplines. Within the Engineering Department Marine Engineering performs essential analyses and calculations for the transportation and installation of offshore structures. When working on location, they provide engineering support for the Vessel Management Team and the Project Team.

HMC consistently pushes the boundaries of what is possible in demanding marine conditions. We work on projects that pose unique planning and engineering challenges. Our clients rely on us to develop ground‐breaking solutions. Therefore we are currently looking for a talented Master student with a hands‐on mentality for our Marine Engineering team.

Graduation Assignment
Offshore operations involve the lifting and set-down of heavy objects with the crane. HMC would like to explore the feasibility to introduce a crane-driver "agent" with artificial intelligence (based on neural networks) in its numerical simulation. This agent would control the crane and would try to set-down the heavy cargo at a favorable moment, just like what would be done in reality.

The goal of this graduation thesis is to make simulations of offshore heavy lift operation more realistic by developing a neural network that can model the behavior of the crane-driver and offshore crew.
