To accelerate resistant variety development in plant breeding programs, precise, non-destructive and quantitative methods to evaluate plant disease resistance or susceptibility are crucial. In the era of genomics, we aim to complement the extensive genomic information with advanced phenotyping, addressing important aspects of the infection process and disease development that often cannot be observed by eye. Within this project, we have a vacancy for a PhD student in the field of genetics/breeding/phytopathology with an interest in sensor technology and phenotyping. This PhD student will be responsible for the infection assays, data acquisition and data analysis.

The PhD student on this TKI project will become part of a larger team aiming to implement sensor-based methods for the detection and evaluation of plant diseases. The project addresses the current needs for advanced phenotyping methods. The PhD student will work closely together with experts in the field of genetics, breeding, phytopathology imaging and artificial intelligence.

The student will work in Plant Breeding, Wageningen University, in close collaboration with team members of this project in the Laboratory of Genetics and the business unit Biointeractions and Plant Health.

PhD student 'VIRTIGATION'

a highly motivated PhD candidate who is passionate about breeding crops with resistance to diseases.

In agricultural production, one of the most serious problems is the crop loss (up to 40% of the crop yield) due to plant pests and diseases. One of the most common practices to control pests and diseases is the use of chemicals. However, concerns on health risks due to exposure to residues in food and environment restrict the use of chemical control and urge the use of resistant plant varieties. Tomato is the world's largest vegetable crop with an estimated production of 160 million tons of tomato fruits. Tomato cultivation is affected by more than 200 species of a wide variety of pests and pathogens, including a large number of viral species. Additional to tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is an emerging virus threatening tomato production.

As PhD candidate you will screen wild tomato relatives to identify resources for resistance to ToBRFV. In parallel with cloning of the resistance genes, you will introgress the identified natural resistance from wild relatives to cultivated tomatoes. For TYLCV, we will take advantage of the cloned resistance Ty-genes (e.g. Ty-1) to study their viral interactors, with the aim to dissect viral genetic determinants for breaking the resistance conferred by the Ty-genes.

The student will work in Plant Breeding, Wageningen University, in close collaboration with Laboratory of Virology as well as the business unit Biointeractions and Plant Health.

Postdoc 'Molecular Therapy for Inherited Retinal Diseases'

The postdoc we are recruiting will take a central role in the development of novel therapeutic strategies for EYS- and USH2A-associated retinal disease.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are progressive disorders that can lead to severe visual impairment or even complete blindness. Long considered incurable, advances over the last decade have made it possible to treat these disorders, with the first gene therapy recently approved as new drug by the FDA and EMA. Yet, there are still many subtypes of IRD for which no treatment is available.In the context of a European collaborative project, funded by the European Joint Programme for Rare Diseases, we aim to develop state-of-the-art genetic therapies for IRD caused by EYS or USH2A mutations. Our lab uses various tailor-made models (iPSC-derived retinal organoids and zebrafish) to study the efficacy and safety of novel therapeutic strategies, with the incentive to translate promising findings directly to patient care.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Plan and perform scientific in vitro and in vivo experiments in an independent manner.
  • Critically analyze data.
  • Supervise junior scientists (technicians, MSc/BSc students) in the lab.
  • Take a leading role in writing manuscripts.

Promovendus 'zorginnovaties CMyLife en CML'

Als promovendus zorginnovaties CMyLife en CML werk je aan het verbeteren van behandeluitkomsten middels innovaties in de zorg. Als promovendus binnen CMyLife ga je, in nauwe samenwerking met je begeleiders, het lopende onderzoek naar effectiviteit van het digital zorg platform verder uitbouwen. Het voorgestelde PhD project richt zich op evaluatie van dit nieuwe zorgmodel.
Het betreft onder andere:

  • Een studie naar de implementatie van CMyLife in Nederlandse centra.
  • Analyse van de impact van CML zorgpaden op uitkomsten in de Nederlandse Kanker Registratie.
  • Analyse van de impact van de landelijke inkoop pilot TKI's in CML de tweede lijn in samenwerking met de Nederlandse Kanker Registratie.
  • Ontwikkelen en analyse van continue bijwerkingen registratie in het kader van CMyGuideline (met subsidie van ZonMw).
  • Kwalitatieve studie naar tevredenheid van patiënten en zorgverleners met CMyLife.
  • Kostenanalyse implementatie CMyLife.

Taken en verantwoordelijkheden
Uitvoering wetenschappelijk onderzoek binnen een vastgesteld onderzoeksplan:

  • Toetsen van probleemstellingen uit het onderzoeksplan en deze zo nodig aanpassen.
  • Zorgdragen voor het verrichten van proefnemingen, waarnemingen, gegevensverzameling e.d..
  • Analyseren en interpreteren van de resultaten en rapporteren in overleg met de (co)promotor.
  • Publiceren van onderzoeksgegevens in een internationaal tijdschrift.

We are looking for an experienced researcher / project leader who wants to apply his / her knowledge of marine governance to a wide range of transdisciplinary research projects aimed at sustainable use of the sea. You play a pivotal role in strengthening socio-ecological research within our organisation and our external marine governance expert. Topics include: How to set up a meaningful dialogue between the government, scientists and stakeholders regarding the management of the North Sea ecosystem, which is increasingly used by new users such as offshore wind or mariculture? Which change processes play a role in the transition to more circular food systems and associated land-sea interactions? How can we link our technical-ecological expertise on the behaviour of fishing fleets with social science expertise on the choice behaviour of fishermen in order to improve our traditional modelling studies of fishing behaviour?
You closely follow societal and scientific developments in the field of marine governance, integrated socio-ecological research and collaboration between scientists and stakeholders, and translate these into applied knowledge questions in close consultation with the sector, government and other stakeholders. You initiate and contribute to new project proposal applications. To this end, you maintain an excellent relationship with the maritime sectors (e.g. fishing, mariculture, shipping, oil, gas, wind), governments and non-governmental organizations. You consider it a challenge to collaborate with stakeholders and natural scientists in conducting research and operate as an independent expert. You strengthen cooperation within Wageningen University & Research as well as with other knowledge institutions. You work in interdisciplinary project teams in which you guide and supervise researchers and research assistants and contribute to the design and implementation of research. In addition to writing project reports and presenting results to various target groups, you will publish your research in peer-reviewed journals. You will be working closely with Wageningen Economic Research on socio-economic issues.
